About the artist
Classically trained from a young age, Perth Hills singer-songwriter Michael Day creates intricate folk and roots music with an existential edge, inviting listeners to wrestle with meaningful—and sometimes unsettling—questions like, “How the heck do we do life?”
Bathed in the soulful sounds of alternative folk, Day blends rich storytelling with indie folk-rock influences, weaving together layered guitar and banjo melodies, driving rhythms, atmospheric synths and soulful harmonies. His songs balance honesty, vulnerability and tongue-in-cheek lyricism, exploring the beauty, absurdity and complexity of being human without ever taking themselves too seriously.
Drawing on personal struggles and quiet moments of reflection, Michael’s music gently encourages listeners to pause, ask deeper questions, and consider what truly matters. While his songs occasionally wander through themes of existentialism, grief and depression, they remain grounded in a quiet hope, longing for peace, connection and joy. After joining Boy & Bear on stage, Michael found a renewed passion for songwriting and live performance, bringing fresh energy to his music and the stories he shares with audiences.
Michael’s artistry continues to gain recognition. In 2026, his music video for “Shadows and Shapes” was nominated for Innovation in Music Video at the WA Screen Culture Awards. He also received a 2025 American Songwriter nomination, was a semi-finalist in the 2023 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) Unsigned Only, and has earned a WAM nomination.
Whether performing with a full band or in an intimate acoustic setting, Michael Day offers songs that invite reflection, spark conversation and remind us that even in life’s uncertainty, we’re not alone in asking the big questions.
