About the artist

Miranda Aitken has a BA in Literature and Writing, studying connection to nature and place, exploring ideas around language, identity and ecology with a strong focus on poetry and Australian writing. Her poetry has been published in numerous anthologies and she has a poem on the Busselton Jetty, and the poem ‘People of the River, Bilya/River Song’, greets visitors to Margaret River’s art precinct. She grew up the southern forests, a child of parents who left the city during the 1975 Counter Culture exodus, emersed in nature, books and music.

Miranda Aitken’s projects include a poetry and song performance piece, ‘My River,’ performed at Nannup Music Festival 2024, Denmark Festival of Voice and Perth Poetry Festival; writing, singing and protesting with the Nannas for Native Forests, and performing with her sister in their band Alt Country band, The Moody Cows.

In 2022 she established The Marritree in Witchcliffe, the coolest, most magical bookshop, gallery and performance space in southwest WA and home to music and spoken word event, ‘Witchy Words & Music’ and one night only shows ‘Live in The Chapel.’ These events grow community, give opportunity to emerging artists, and have brought feature artists such as Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, Emily Barker, Kerryn Fields, Kavisha Mazzella and more to regional communities.
