THE NANNUP MUSIC CLUB INC
The Club
The Nannup Music Club Inc is a non-profit, incorporated arts organisation dedicated to fostering community through music and the arts. Established in 1988 by Bernie Wilborn, it has been organising the annual Nannup Music Festival (aka South West Folk Festival for the first few years) since 1990. The Club is run by a dedicated volunteer Committee and passionate team of staff.
The first festival was held in existing venues around the town of Nannup: the Town Hall, the Lesser Hall, the RSL Hall and the Recreation Centre. In 2003 the Festival moved its evening venue to the grounds of Holberry House, as the Committee decided that an open-air evening concert made the Festival very special. As the crowds grew, The Shire of Nannup began work on the Nannup Amphitheatre at the Foreshore Park, ready for the Festival to move its main venue there in 2007, where it remains to this day.
With the Festival ran solely by volunteers for the first couple of decades, the Club had never had an allocated space for its meetings and operations. In 2008 and with its first employed part-time staff, the Club leased a small office on Warren Rd, which was followed by the lease of the old Supper Room in 2011. In 2018, and with a Shire of Nannup assisted loan, the Club acquired property in the heart of the Festival site on Brockman St, where it now houses its HQ, meeting space, storage sheds and Secret Garden venue. The goal is to further develop the site to better serve Club and NMF operations and artistic program.
Alongside its flagship event, and in-line with its commitment to facilitate cultural experiences in a regional setting, the Club endeavours to develop and maintain an annual artistic program of events for the local community. Past events include Festival of Small Halls, Solstice in the Secret Garden, A Day on the Village Green, Nannup Instachoir, as well as event collaborations with Southern Forest Arts, Nannup Community Cinema, Nannup Flower & Garden Festival and the Shire of Nannup.
The Club is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and supported by the State and Federal Governments, Regional Arts WA, Lotterywest, Totally Sound and the Shire of Nannup.
To create, connect and strengthen community through music and the arts; to encourage and promote emerging and Indigenous artists; to drive local economic activity and support regional liveability through cultural tourism; to respect the environment and work towards minimising our impact, while learning and educating where we can.

Congratulations to the committee members past and present for bringing this festival to this amazing milestone of 30 years. From its humble beginnings in 1990 to the 2019’s million dollar show, the Nannup Music Festival (AKA South West Folk Festival for the first few years) has to rank as one of Australia’s most successful music festivals. Every year, the Nannup Music Festival gets better in almost every direction. What the Festival has become is down to the people - past and current committee members - who had the courage and imagination to employ the right people, get the right financial support and stretch the boundaries to make this Festival the best it can be!
Bernie and Rubela’s Music Club nights in the front room of Dry Brook in 1988 were the start of our addiction and we were hooked from there on. Following the influx of talent and the excitement of the inaugural South West Folk Festival in 1990, the community largely came together for the festival which proved to be a game changer for Nannup in the nineties. Bernie you didn’t realise at the time the catalyst for change it would become. There is so much to celebrate after 30 years of the Nannup Music Festival and we hope that it continues to prosper and grow well into the future.
Favourite memories: ...the camaraderie, support and the dedication of the people behind the scenes who make the festival work. These people become family and there have been enduring friendships made from time working on the festival...watching the emerging artists start in Nannup and then perform on the world stage. Artists like Gurrumul, Kate Hiedke Miller, Passenger, Loren Kate have performed in Nannup before they were picked up by labels or won awards.
